The Most Meaningful Luxury Experiences in Guanacaste

Most guests arrive at our beachfront villa in Tamarindo with a simple plan for their week. Usually, they envisage spending their days by the infinity pool and sipping cocktails at sunset on the terrace, perhaps squeezing in a private surf lesson before breakfast. Yet within a day or two, we notice curiosity setting in. They ask about the handmade clay pottery they see in local shops or the tunes of marimba drifting from the village. They comment on the exquisite local meals prepared by our private Chef, asking about ingredients many have never seen before. And that’s when we can introduce them to the best luxury experiences in Guanacaste, the kind that have nothing to do with thread count or wellness treatments.

There is a side to our Costa Rican province many visitors never get to experience and we enjoy nothing more than introducing guests to the unique traditions that have emerged from our precious lands.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF LUXURY IN GUANACASTE

“For years, luxury travel meant more…more marble, more courses at dinner, more staff hovering at your elbow, pretty much more of everything. We have noticed that guests we now host want less of the fluff and more, much more with substance. They want space and quiet, and the freedom to spend a morning learning something new, and preferably with their hands.” – The Point’s Guest Experience Manager.

Guanacaste boasts a cowboy and indigenous craft heritage that has mostly been overtaken by luxury resorts and cookie-cutter experiences. But the country still guards its traditions and its home cooking with pride, and almost every aspect can be enjoyed on a private, totally immersive experience. Spend time with a local artisan, one with deep knowledge and an inherent desire to share that knowledge with anyone who is interested in learning more. If you’re searching for vacation rentals in Costa Rica on the beach that offer more than sunshine and sand, we welcome you to The Point Luxury Villa, where local experiences are part of the stay itself.

Here are just a few of the amazing luxury experiences Guanacaste has to offer.

MEET THE CHOROTEGA POTTERS OF GUAITIL

Less than an hour inland from Tamarindo is the village of Guaitil, where artisans have been shaping clay using traditional methods for a thousand years. The Chorotega families here still dig clay from the ground, grinding volcanic stones to use for color, and finishing pieces in wood-burning beehive ovens. The neighboring hamlet of San Vicente works the same clay, and between the two you can follow every step, from raw earth to a surface rubbed smooth with a river stone.

The experience: We can arrange a private session with a working artisan family, where you shape a piece on a hand-turned wheel and paint it with the iron and manganese oxides that give Chorotega pottery its rust-red and black designs. Children take to it as readily as grandparents do and we find this to be one of the most rewarding family experiences our guests have enjoyed. More than one family has shipped a full set of bowls and vases home, and we constantly hear how they make for the most unique souvenirs in Costa Rica.

We couldn’t agree more.

RANCHLANDS AND THE SABANERO SADDLE

Guanacaste is cattle country, and the sabanero, the Costa Rican cowboy, is as central to the country’s identity as the beaches and surfing. Long before tourism arrived, families ran herds across these open plains, and that heritage still shapes daily life for many locals.

The experience: Take a ride with a working sabanero who will take you through private ranchland and, on some routes, along the sand near the mouth of the Tamarindo estuary. The horses are calm and easily matched to each rider, so a nervous first-timer and a confident equestrian can head out on the same outing. Early morning is the best time to go, before the day’s heat settles in, and when the light is low and the plains are still waking up.

MARIMBA AND THE PUNTO GUANACASTECO

Marimba is perhaps the sound most tied to Guanacaste. It’s a large wooden xylophone that can be played by one person but is often played by three or four musicians once. It carries the Punto Guanacasteco, the courtship dance roots that became Costa Rica’s national dance, and a startling performance full of swirling colorful skirts and fancy footwork.

The experience: We can bring a marimba trio to the villa for an evening on the terrace, and if your group is open to the idea, a local dancer to teach the basic steps. And FYI, those who swear they will only watch are the ones who invariably end up dancing first. Bring the children in, and it turns into a proper party, the sort that spills past bedtime without anyone caring.

A TRADITIONAL GUANACASTECAN DINNER TABLE, SET JUST FOR YOU

The food of Guanacaste runs on corn, slow cooking and an abundance of love. Fresh tortillas pressed by hand, gallo pinto for breakfast, olla de carne simmered with yuca and plantain, and corn treats like chorreadas and rosquillas that rarely miss a family gathering.

The experience: There are two lovely ways to enjoy local cuisine at The Point Luxury Villa. A private chef can build a Guanacastecan menu around what is in season and cook it in front of you, or you can join a guided cooking class and learn to make arroz de maíz and chorreadas yourself. Either way, you’ll savor your special dinner on the terrace, with the ocean providing the background soundtrack.
