Are you looking to explore the best beaches in Guanacaste, Costa Rica? Choose to stay at The Point Luxury villa, and you’ll be located in the heart of the Guanacaste province, within easy reach of the some the country’s dreamiest beaches. 1. Playa Conchal

Snuggled between Playa Brasilito and Playa Flamingo, Playa Conchal is perhaps the most famous beach in Guanacaste – and Costa Rica – revered for its sparkling pink hue. The shores comprise millions of tiny seashells (conchas marinas in Spanish), from which the beach gets its name. Conchal is well-developed and offers numerous indulgences. Relax in a beachside cabana and enjoy spectacular sea views, or ask The Point’s Concierge to organize a guided snorkeling tour to explore the vibrant underwater world. The sea here is crystal clear with fantastic visibility. Currents near the rocks can be a little strong, so make your guide aware of your group’s skill level, and they will ensure a safe and rewarding outing.

How to get there from The Point – Playa Conchal is about 10 miles north of our villa. You can reach it by road with our private transport in 30-40 minutes. The last stretch is on an unpaved road, adding to the adventure. Alternatively, take your private catamaran for the day to reach Conchal by sea. Depending on currents, the trip can take 1-2 hours. 1. Playa Flamingo

Flamingo is the picture-perfect beach: it’s shaped like a half-moon, framed by insanely verdant hills and has a white, powdery sandy shore. One of the very best beaches in Guanacaste in which to spend a super relaxing day. The calm waters tend to keep the surfers away and are perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and stand-up paddleboarding. Don’t forget to tell your Concierge to pack the water toys for you day trip. Take the catamaran for a cruise along the coast or plan a deep-sea fishing expedition.

Playa Flamingo is quite the upscale beach, so you’ll find a luxury marina and a bevy of excellent top-end seafood restaurants along its shores. If you fancy a spot of retail therapy, pop into the boutique shops selling hand-made crafts and beachwear. A full-day destination, Playa Flamingo can easily keep you entertained from morning until a (rather spectacular) sunset. We highly recommend the seared tacos and coconut cocktails at Coco Loco – the best place for sundowners on Playa Flamingo.

How to get there from The Point – Flamingo is about a 40-minute drive north of our villa or a 1.5-hour catamaran sail.

  1. Playa Hermosa

Playa Hermosa lives up to its name (which means ‘beautiful’ in Spanish) and is a particularly good day-trip destination for active travelers. A fabulous surfing hub, Hermosa attracts surfers looking for world-class waves.

We often recommend Playa Hermosa when we host a mixed group of guests since it offers both adrenalin-pumping activities and plenty of options for more sedate activities. Choose from snorkeling, diving, kayaking, jet skiing, and more on the beach, as well as biking and hiking tours along the coast. Unwind with a beachside massage on the beach or enjoy a gourmet meal at a nearby seaside restaurant.

How to get there from The Point – This beach is about 40 miles from The Point, a stunning drive north of the villa past Playa Flamingo. You can easily visit both on the same day if you prefer. You can also get there by catamaran.

  1. Playa Panama

The next beach north of Hermosa is the delightful Playa Panama. Soft golden sand and gentle surf make it ideal if staying at The Point with tiny tots. The half-moon bay is secluded and calm, so you can easily kayak the coast or enjoy a private picnic at the beach. The Point’s Chef will gladly organize food and drinks for you. Nicknamed the little Flamingo by locals, Panama is laid-back and has a few options for a drink or a bite to eat. Otherwise, it’s a local hidden gem with calm seas and a relaxing vibe.

How to get there from The Point – Add ten minutes to your journey by road from Playa Hermosa or an extra half-hour catamaran sail around the tip separating the two.

  1. Playa Misterio & Playa Bonita

If heading to Playa Panama by catamaran, you’ll be sailing north around a remote and secluded stretch of coast that hides some of the least visited and most beautiful beaches in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Playa Misterio and Playa Bonita are two of several hidden coves you can stop and explore. Getting here on foot is arduous and over rocks, so not many people visit, which is why you’ll often have the beach to yourself. Misterio is a stunning white-sand beach with turquoise shallows, an ideal frolicking spot at low tide. Playa Bonita is easier to visit, so it sees more tourists, yet it’s still uncrowded and worth a stop.

How to get there from The Point – These beaches are the perfect stopovers on your way to Playa Panama, but only if you explore the coast by sea.

  1. Playa Ocotal

Keep heading north along the coast, and you’ll come to the secluded and serene Playa Ocotal, another hidden gem known for its calm waters and exceptional underwater world. Ocotal hosts an incredible coral reef that’s awesome for snorkelers and divers. You’ll also find options for paddleboard and kayak rental, or you can indulge in sport fishing, one of Guanacaste’s main highlights. Catch a mahi-mahi or marlin, and The Point’s Chef will happily cook it for you in the evening when you return to the villa. Playa Ocotal offers a few stunning elevated viewpoints if you wish to stretch your legs and soak up outstanding coastal views.

How to get there from The Point – Playa Ocotal is just two bays down from Playa Hermosa, right next to Playa Gringo, another paradisical beach you should explore.

  1. Playa Barrigona

Playa Barrigona is one of the most secluded beaches in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. It’s accessible only by boat or a super scenic hike on lush rainforest trails. The beach is surrounded by untouched dense jungle and is a favorite among celebrities seeking privacy and serenity. Playa Barrigona is barefoot luxury at its best: nothing but pristine sandy shores, natural beauty, and a few locals selling cocktails in coconut shells. It’s ideal if you’re in the mood for an intimate beach where you can spend the day. Barrigona is the kind of beach that makes you feel a world away from civilization.

How to get there from The Point—As the crow flies, Playa Barrigona is not too far from The Point. Yet driving there can easily take 2-3 hours. The scenery through Nicoya’s countryside is fantastic and just as spectacular by boat. Either way, this is a full-day outing from our villa but incredibly worthwhile.

  1. Playa Grande

Playa Grande is a gorgeous beach and an important nesting ground for endangered Leatherback turtles. Turtles come to nest here typically between October and March, and if you head here very early in the morning, you’ll find tell-tale tracks of nesting mums. There are usually no restrictions on visiting the beaches during the day in nesting season, although if you head here by boat you have higher chances of spotting turtles swimming nearby. Sea turtles head to shore to nest just after sunset, so after spending a whole day sunbathing and swimming, you can join a turtle-watching tour with a licensed guide. At The Point, we can organize a turtle-watching tour if you’re visiting during nesting season. Watching turtles nest is one of nature’s most jaw-dropping spectacles and a truly unforgettable experience.

How to get there from The Point – Playa Grande is about 25 minutes north of The Point Luxury Villa by road, crossing the estuary. It is also another perfect Guanacaste beach to reach by boat.

  1. Playa Junquillal

If you wish to explore more of the coastline south of The Point, pin beautiful, jungle-framed Junquillal on your map. This super laid-back beach is favored by horseback riding tours (the sunset rides are sensational and highly recommended). It is an ideal beach if you’re craving a more laid-back day trip to an enjoyable, uncrowded, wild beach. Junquillal offers shaded spots under palm trees (beware of falling coconuts!) and options for long beach walks. It is one of Guanacaste’s wildest and most secluded beaches and a must-visit if you stay with us!

How to get there from The Point – Junquillal is just a few miles south of The Point, but it will take about 40 minutes to reach it by road.

  1.  Playa Sámara

Playa Sámara is about as far south as you might want to explore from The Point if you don’t wish to travel for more than an hour and a half by road. And what a glorious beach to aim for! Sámara is halfway down the coast to the tip of the Nicoya Peninsula. This local hangout is perfect for those seeking a calm beach to learn to surf or simply swim in calm waves. Perfect for vacationing families! The framing reef is ideal for a relaxing snorkel, so don’t forget to ask your Concierge to ensure the snorkel gear is packed and ready to go. You’ll find a handful of bars and restaurants along the seafront and a surprisingly active nightlife with several establishments hosting live music if you wish to linger after sunset.

How to get there from The Point – Sámara is perfect for a day trip because it’s on the meeting point between the coastal road (the 160) and the inland, slightly faster 150. Make a day of it by telling your private driver to plan a loop, perhaps exploring the coastal road on the way down and taking the faster inland highway to return home.
