1. Tabacón Thermal Spa, La Fortuna

Tabacón is the most famous and commercialized spa resort in the country. It is built around a multitude of thermal springs heated by Arenal Volcano. Given the resort’s popularity, the hot springs can get crowded at peak times, which can be a bit of a killjoy if you’re after a more tranquil experience. For a quieter time, we suggest you plan your visit on a weekday early in the morning. 

Tabacón offers many treatments, including volcanic mud wraps and scrubs. Yet the most distinctive indulgence is the Temazcal Ceremony, a traditional Mesoamerican sweat lodge experience led by a shaman. The ritual combines heat, steam, and herbal infusions to induce sweating, something that is believed to purify the body and mind. The Temazcal is traditionally a Mexican ceremony, and the Tabacón Thermal Spa was the first to introduce it to Costa Rica.

2. ONDA Spa & Wellness, Papagayo Peninsula

ONDA is set within the pristine grounds of the Andaz Resort on the Papagayo Peninsula along the northern Pacific coast.
